Course overview
The foundation degree in Logistics Management will give you an excellent base of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in this sector. It will support your career development whether you are already working in logistics management or you are starting out on this career path.
The modular format of the degree means it is very flexible to suit specific business and learner needs.
The course will give you a solid, practical grounding in the principles and practice of logistics management as well as developing your broader, transferable skills.
Successful completion of the course will enable you to proceed to the final year of a full BSc (Hons) degree at the University of Bolton.

About the course
The foundation degree is a University of Bolton course that is run in partnership with Mantra Learning in Middleton, Manchester.
You will be taught through classes, tutorials and seminars at the offices of Mantra Learning and the University of Bolton. A work-based project is an important element of the course; all assignments are work-related so your studies will be part of your contribution to operational improvement as well as ensuring the context of your studies is practical and uses real business situations. The University will support you in the development of a work-based project if you are currently not working.
The design of the degree matches a national framework so that, if you move location, you will be able to resume your studies at another educational centre. Also, because the course is flexible, you can step on and off the scheme to suit work commitments (subject to maximum registration period) and if you change employer part-way through the course, you will be able to continue where you left off (pending your employer’s agreement).
What you will learn
You will learn key skills relating to logistics such as IT for business, supply chain management, health and safety for the transport industry, international trade and transport, managing risk and procurement.
In addition, you will develop your broader, transferable skills including communications, problem-solving, reasoning, professionalism and work process management.
What you will study
You study at two different levels.
Level 1
At Level 1 you will acquire a good understanding of the basic principles underlying the theories and methods of logistics systems, and be able to communicate clearly about those basic principles.
You will study a mix of optional and compulsory modules from the following: Managing your Foundation Degree whilst Working; Developing the Product and Market for Logistics; Managing and Developing your People; Managing the Money; Managing and Improving Warehousing; Project Management.
Level 2
At Level 2 you will develop a critical stance towards the theories and methods of logistics systems. An emphasis will be placed on analysis and evaluation of these theories and methods, as well as their use in the modern logistics environment.
You will carry out your work-based project as part of this level, along with optional and compulsory modules from the following: Managing and Improving the Supply Chain; Technology for Logistics; Health and Safety for the Transport Industry; Freight Transport and International Trade; Managing and Developing the Supplier Interface; Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Logistics; Research Methods and Professional Skills Development.
Special features
- Core modules are stand-alone and focus on specific skills and knowledge.
- Should students not wish to complete the whole foundation degree, and only select one or two modules, they can be studied as non-credit bearing short courses.
- People with foundation degrees will have increased potential to contribute effectively in their organisations.
- The flexible nature of the course means you can work and study to match your career and personal commitments. As the design of the degree matches a national framework you will be able to resume your studies at another educational centre if you re-locate.

Your work-based project will give you an opportunity to put into practice the theories and principles you will study in the classroom.
