Course overview

This course is a partnership between the University of Bolton and Backstage Academy, based in South Kirkby, Wakefield. The LS-Live Studios are home to the Backstage Academy and are Europe’s largest purpose-built rehearsal facility, the preferred choice for some of the world’s biggest names in music, such as Lady Gaga, Elbow, Kylie and Rihanna, together with brands such as Jaguar, Aston Martin and Monster Energy.

This course focuses on the artistic and creative use of technology. It includes modules on lighting, sound, staging, live visuals and entertainment control networks, together with work skills, concept and production design and specialist skills such as lasers and emerging 3D technologies.

About the course

The FdA Live Events Production is an intensive, 15 month course based around a range of industry accredited qualifications (such as the Events Safety passport, Final Cut, Pro Tools, Avid Venue and WYSIWYG to name a few). These qualifications are written into 12 modules that cover the fundamentals of live events production and take a unique look at specialist skills, such as working with lasers, temporary power and 3D technologies for live performance.

The foundation degree is at an academic level similar to that of a HND with the modules being rated at levels HE0, HE4 and HE5. The distinctive feature of any foundation degree is the work-based learning, preparing students for employment or progression to further study.

Students registered on the FdA Live Events Production will be eligible to progress onto the BA (Hons) Live Events Production top-up one-year course (subject to validation) after successful completion of the foundation degree.

Special features

  • Accelerated delivery - complete the course in 15 months rather than two years.
  • Industry linkages and partnerships - a unique range of training content supplied by leading manufacturers and practitioners.
  • Developing your portfolio - as part of the course you will be given your own iPad2 to use to document and develop your own e-portfolio via a cloud based system. This will enable employers to instantly see evidence of your skills and provides an innovative new method of assessment.
  • Work experience and contact - over the 15 months you will work in a variety of venues and develop a range of contacts that will give you valuable industry networking opportunities.

What you will learn

The foundation degree is based around three key areas - practical work skills, personal skills and industry-recognised certification.

Practical work skills are developed around a broad understanding of all the techniques that make up live events production - from sound, lighting, staging, motors, trussing and live visuals to show control software and events management. Teaching is based around practical workshops, masterclasses and work on events and productions, all with the common aim of enabling you to make critical and professional judgements over the creative use of new and emerging technologies in this exciting industry.

You will develop personal skills including how to set up as a freelancer, career planning and development, presentation and inter-personal skills, and the ability to evaluate and take responsibility for the quality and management of your own work.

Industry-recognised certification is built into each module and will ensure that you can demonstrate your ability to apply learning to actual work-based scenarios and products. You will graduate from the course equipped with an invaluable range of certification and accreditation from industry-based manufacturers and suppliers.
