Course overview

The Specialist Community Public Health Nursing course is designed to prepare practitioners for the role of health visitor through meeting the professional standards laid down by the NMC for registration on part 3 of the professional register. It is of interest to you if you are a nurse or midwife and wish to further develop your career through working with clients and communities to improve health. Why choose to study this course at Bolton? The University is one of the best places in the country to study health courses. Health visiting has been within the educational portfolio of the University of Bolton for many decades. This health visiting course is the first in the country to be accredited as Baby Friendly by the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative. This means that students are trained during the programme to support mothers to breast feed effectively. The University also ensures that all health visitors undertake training in the Solihull Parenting approach which supports practitioners to promote emotional health and wellbeing in children and families. The University has a long-standing and excellent reputation for producing effective and innovative health visitors and offering quality, supportive learning opportunities in partnership with primary health care trusts. Quality assurance processes within the University and through external professional bodies, ensure that courses continue to a high standard and are directly relevant to professional practice.

About the course

The learning outcomes of the course are determined by the professional standards of the NMC and take into account the need to be responsive to locally determined health needs and service delivery. There is an emphasis on the importance of leadership through seeking to understand the impact of wider determinants of health on clients and their communities and subsequent health promoting interventions.

The academic team prides itself on providing a supportive environment that is conducive to your learning needs, and is committed to supporting you in the development of your academic and professional knowledge. You will also develop key transferable skills, in order to become a flexible, autonomous and highly-skilled practitioner.

Special features

  • The changing climate of health care delivery demands a programme of learning that is flexible to meet the needs of learners in their specialist area of practice, but also to be able to respond to policy developments and emerging health needs. The programme therefore contains a range of workshops, seminars and directed study in order to meet those demands.
  • The academic team has many years experience of health care work in NHS settings and bring particular expertise in public health, child care law and safeguarding children.
  • The University of Bolton offers all students an excellent and supportive learning environment including small group learning, one-to-one support as well as 24/7 IT access and WiFi across campus.

What you will learn

Your learning will be built on a combination of campus based study and a programme of supervised learning experience in a practice setting, overseen by a practice teacher. Areas of study within the programme include: specialist practice for community public health nurses; health promotion; working with families and communities; and investigating and challenging evidence based practice.

You will learn a wide range of new skills with supporting knowledge to enable you to practice as a safe and effective specialist community public health nurse. For example, these will include skills of leadership, communication, enquiry, advocacy, critical reflection and analysis.

What you will study

Core modules and specialist modules will enable you to benefit from shared inter-professional learning and also to focus upon your defined area of practice (health visiting).

The modules within the programme are delivered at both Level HE6 and Level HE7. They are:
Principles for Leading Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Practice including the V100 nurse prescribing qualification;
Critical Evaluation Evidence and Practice;
Leading Health Promotion Practice;
Collaborative Working for Health Improvement;
Safeguarding Children

Assessment methods include presentations, written assignments and examinations and the development of a professional portfolio of learning.

The programme is designed to enable you to complete 50% practice and 50% University-based learning followed by 10 weeks consolidation of practice. Therefore, each of the modules draws on underpinning theory but is also supported by learning in the practice setting. Assessment of your competence in practice is undertaken by your practice teacher. This assessment is done on a formative basis through the programme, with an eventual summative assessment at the end of the second semester.

The nature of public health requires an appreciation of the range of facets to public health work. Consequently, at least three weeks will also be spent in settings considered important for your learning about public health nursing but may not be central to your defined area of practice. These will be facilitated according to your identified learning needs. Practice placements are also audited annually to ensure that you will be exposed to a quality standard of learning in the practice setting.
